Changes for 2024

Gone are the resolutions and the Best and Worst lists for 2023. Looking back at my past posts, not much has changed as far as music because my favorite albums from last year are the same ones I still listen to this year. And I haven't found anything new in music I liked. I think I'm now at that age where I'm sticking to what I like and not keeping up with what's new anymore. In fact...I know less and less new artists each year that is passing by. There's an episode of The Simpsons where Homer flashes back to his youth and his dad quotes "I used to be with 'It', but then they changed what 'It' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'It' anymore, and what's 'It' is weird and scary. It'll happen to you!"

That quote is so true! I can't stand the new "metal" bands coming out, such as Bring me the Horizon, Sleep Token, and Bad Omens. But my hope is that those bands will be a stepping stone to the younger fans who stick with the music and hope to find something better and heavier. Maybe they'll go backwards and check out the classic metal bands such as Dio, Judas Priest, Ozzy, and of course...Iron Maiden!

The movies that I'm into have changed though. I still like Marvel, but there are still the shows I have yet to get around to. I've had what is called "Marvel fatigue" because so many movies and shows are coming out that I can't keep up and am kinda tired of the MCU. But I have discovered something new to get into, and that's the direct-to-video horror movies shown on Tubi, and most of those are from Full Moon Features. One of their best series of movie are Puppet Master. I ended up getting into movies with puppets and possessed dolls thanks to the Conjuring and of course the old 90s' Goosebumps TV show. Although that I ended up rediscovering the latter thanks to my friend Jaylin who pointed out that the living dummy Slappy from the show sounds like our former lead named Nathanial. So from there, I got back into Goosebumps, the show and the books.

Speaking of books...I am reading the Dune books and am almost finished with the first book, and have the second book, which I did read a long time ago, but I couldn't understand it then because I thought the old movie would have helped (it didn't) But thanks to the new two-part movie, I can understand the books better and when I get to the second book The Dune Messiah, I will understand that too.

Well, that is all for now. I'll be back next year and see what has and hasn't changed.

Best and Worst of 2022

I didn't get to finish last years list, but I'm off from work today, so I can complete this one.

Best Concerts:

Compared to last year, I went to a lot of shows, the most so far.

  • Iron Maiden's Legacy of the Beast 2022: Anaheim, both nights. First night was on the third balcony and the second night was in the second row from the stage because I had also won "First to the Barrier" although I got squished, it was worth it!
  • Rammstein at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, after waiting 2 years, the show finally went on! And it was worth the wait.
  • Behemoth with Arch Enemy. Second time seeing Behemoth, but first time seeing Arch Enemy, which was awesome.
  • Ghost with Twin Temple and Volbeat. I unfortunately missed most of Twin Temple's set, but got to hear their last song. Third time seeing Volbeat, who sound much better live.
  • Adrian Smith with Richie Kotzen, twice! Got to be close to Adrian and got to go with my friends, both old and new.
  • Last but not least...An Evening with Bruce Dickinson. OK not a concert, but it was still a good show.

  • Liz Truss, the last Prime Minister that Queen Elizabeth met before she passed, but only served 45 days before resigning.
  • Elon Musk, for buying Twitter and charging $8 a month to keep the blue check mark, which was meant for famous people to verify that their accounts are legit.

People of the Year:

  • Volodymyr Zelensky, the Prime Minister of Ukraine who fought side by side with his people against Russia's attacks
  • Dolly Parton, country music icon. Although she tried to remove herself from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations, I make an exception for her to be included with Judas Priest. Resolutions for 2023

Looking at my past resolutions, I realized that it needs to say the next new year, not "of..." Anyway, here we go!

1. Try again on going zero waste. I'm now moving on from shampoo bars to a refillable shampoo bottle. I'm also going to continue to use up all the Bath & Body Works products before I buy anymore new product. Then when I do, I will be buying the soap bars in place of their body washes. I will also attempt to provide refillable cleaning products.

2. Get my spending under control and save more. Cut down on eating out and going to coffee shops. Set aside more money in my savings account to get by the next slow seasons of Six Flags. Make higher car payments to reach my goal of either getting it halfway paid off, or ambitiously paid off completely by the end of next year.

3. Go to less big concerts, but more smaller shows. But if I do go to the big concerts, get the cheaper seats. Also try to buy less shirts and more unique merch.

4. Put my foot down more often. If anyone asks for a ride and it turns into an inconvenience or being taken advantage of, I must cut them off. Also if I ever loan out money, I should draft a contract about getting paid back.

5.  Get my teeth fixed. Hopefully my company insurance will cover more than Denti-cal did.

Best and Worst ov 2021

I Gotta do this quickly because I...have to go to work! Yes, it's finally happened! I finally got a job! Now I have new resolutions to make, which I will post later. Might update this list since I'm short on time, but here is the best and worst of 2021.

Best Albums ov 2021:

Iron Maiden-Senjutsu
Gojira-Fortitude

Best Songs ov 2021:
The Writing on the Wall by Iron Maiden
The Chapeltown Rag by Slipknot

No Best Concert ov 2021 this time since I only went to one, which was Knotfest. On one hand, it was good to go to a concert again, but this one wasn't the best one. For once, the sound system was way too loud and i regret not taking earplugs with me. Then I didn't care for Fever 333 or Bring Me the Horizon, and finally...as happy as I was to see Slipknot again, it was the same set list as their last one, except for their new song The Chapeltown Rag. But this year in 2022, I have four concerts and performances lined up for the year, hoping to get a second night for both Iron Maiden and Rammstein.

Best Movies ov 2021
Black Widow
Spiderman: No Way Home

(Rest I'll update later)

Most Hated People of the Year:
Kyle Rittenhouse for shooting at protestors, I don't care that he was found to be in the right due to being attacked by those protestors, it wouldn't have happened if he hadn't gone there in the first place.
Vanessa Espinoza_The wannabe influencer real estate agent who was supposed to help the Turpin children but failed to do so. I hope her real estate license gets revoked.

All the front-line workers such as Doctors, nurses, firefighters, the good cops, retail workers, restaurant staff, and all the volunteers who stepped up to help those in need, such as shopping for the elderly or sewing masks.

Most hated people of the year
Donald Trump: but thankfully...he is NOT re-elected!
Mitch McConnell: for shooting down the bill to bump up the stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000.
Ben Shapiro: dude, if you don't like Cardi B and Nicki Minaj's WAP song, then don't listen to it!
Chris Taylor Brown, the lead singer of Trapt for doing that godawful song "Headstrong" and for his extremist views that line up with the proud boys. Now Nickelback is no longer the most hated band.
Ellen DeGeneres: Don't let that quirky personality fool you, she's a monster behind the camera
Amber Heard: I believed her until I heard the video of how she abused Johnny Depp
J.K. Rowling: Her stance on trans-people has tainted her. I will still watch the Harry Potter movies, but everything else she does will be ignored.

Resolutions of 2021

Boy! This was the WORST year ever! Basically, it told 2016 to hold it's beer because Covid-19 proved to be worse than a bunch of celebrity deaths from 2016. I had a few close calls myself, but my family and I lucked out as some members of our extended family had close contact with the infected. But I will still make my resolutions. I did succeed in some of last years, although the pandemic made going zero waste very difficult, however, the flip-side is that I cut down on grocery shopping on a whim and being more decisive on what we really need. We even got around to some old items in our freezer and pantry during the first lock-down. So, here we go...

1. Continue with going zero waste. The pandemic has made it challenging, but this time I must try harder. My bottled shampoo and conditioner is almost gone and I have a shampoo/conditioner bar ready to go.

2. Support more local businesses. I've already taken the first step by quitting Starbucks cold turkey and now I go to the local coffee shops where I can still get my blended drinks or lattes. I also try to hit up local restaurants instead of fast-food or big chain restaurants. My rule of thumb is that the local place must have 5 or less locations at best, but the exceptions are places that are regional or only in a few states such as In-n-Out.

3. When mom and dad ask for help or a question, try not to groan, moan, or complain. Just help them with their need and then you can get back to what you were doing.

4. Continue with using social media less. I had been keeping so busy that I haven't had time to browse on my phone or use my laptop.

5. Leave the past behind and buried. There is nothing we can do about my actions in the past, except to never repeat them again. Also, the people who burned me then have not been in my life for years now. I need to stop thinking about them or bringing them up in conversation. I need to get them out of my head, but hold on to the lessons I learned from those mistakes. I need to focus more on the present and continue to get my life back on track as if those past incidents never happened at all.

6. When going shopping, whether it's for groceries, household items, or other miscellaneous items: have a plan to only get those items and then get out. Stick more to the grocery list and avoid impulse buying. Don't buy certain items until they are all gone. Try to cook enough to feed everyone and have little to no leftovers. Any food leftover should be eaten the very next day.

Resolutions of 2020

I was hesitant to do this again, but there have been some from the past hat I actually kept or finally accomplished a few years later. So here we go!

  1. Take further steps to going zero waste. Zero waste means you reduce your trash and single use plastics. A few years before the plastic grocery bag ban, my family and I were already using reusable bags. Last year I've started my own process by using cloth napkins in place of paper, I try to carry my reusable cup with me when I go out. Then recently I bought a bar of facial cleansing soap in place of the ones that come in tubes. Up next...gooodbye Rubbermaid containers and hello bamboo containers.
  2. Go to the gym more and stop counting calories. Having the membership paid automatically helps to motivate me to go more often, although I haven't gone since November, but I will catch up. I will also stop tracking calories or doing special diets, but...I will make sure to eat in moderation, but also incorporate healthier options.
  3. Keep adding to my savings account. I wasn't good at making sure I put away money in savings, and a few times I borrowed money from it and intended to pay it back, but fell short. This time I got a loan, which forces me to pay it off, but it will go into my savings and it is building my credit!
  4. Do more volunteer work. I still am seeking a job, but I can help fill in the gaps if I do more volunteer work that isn't at my church or American Legion.
  5. Use my productive time more wisely. I've cut down my computer use times before, but I need to keep it up. It has hampered my creativity and makes me slack on my chores and staying up late.
And that's it! I think these are more realistic and am more likely to stick to them.

Best and Worst of 2018

And we are now near the end of 2018! I can now complete this list by putting in the best of from the other half of this year. The other post before this one features the best from earlier this year, and would be best not to repeat them here. Some new features will be added, like Best small shows because I went to a lot more shows in smaller venues.

Best New Albums:
Halestorm - Vicious
Behemoth - I Loved You at your Darkest

Worst New Albums:
Everything is Love by Beyonce' and Jay-Z. Yeah, I didn't buy this charade! Once the dust settles, he'll cheat on her again, watch!

Best new Songs:
Uncomfortable, by Halestorm. A song about being yourself instead of trying to meet in the middle for other people.
Do Not Disturb by Halestorm. A songabout the time Lzzy had a threesome in Holland with a guy and girl, just doing what the male musicians have been doing for years.
Afterlife by SHVPES. One of the songs I do like off the second album. Doesn't sound like Iron Maiden at all, but that's OK!
Voice of Tresspass by Between the Buried and Me. A mix of swing type music with metal, very interesting combo.
All Love is Lost, by Body Count. Dedicated to the ex-nameless ghouls and to Barry McCay who is the lawyer suing Steve Harris.

Best New Bands:
Siva, a not yet famous band we saw opening up for Ghost A.D. that I saw at the Slidebar Kitchen. Maybe they'll get signed, maybe they won't, but they were good.
SHVPES - The second son of Bruce Dickinson forms his own group and just released their second album, but in my opinion, I liked their first album better. He sounds nothing like his dad, but he's making it on his own!
Between the Buried and Me - technically not new this year, but I just discovered them so it's new to me.
Best Major Concerts:
Ghost - Rats on the Road, Riverside Auditorium. The first time they did an intermission between Acts one and two.
Ghost - A Pale Tour Named Death, the Forum. One of their first arena shows! But it still felt as intimate as a smaller venue. Also confirmed for me no more standing floor tickets!

Best Small Shows:
Maiden USA, Ghost A.D. at the Whisky A GoGo. I will see both bands again before New Years Eve.
Under the Sun, Black Sabbath tribute band.
A League of Extraordinary Metal Heads, a band with a total of 30 members, but do different covers from Dio to the Cranberries.
The Iron Maidens - Gaslamp, Long Beach. My first time finally seeing this officially endorsed all female tribute band!

In Memorium:
Verne Troyer, Burt Reynolds, Fast Eddie Clarke, Aretha Franklin, Jill Janus, Vinnie Paul

Best Movies:
Black Panther
Avengers: Infinity Wars
Ant-Man and The Wasp

Worst Movies:
Happytime Murders, a movie about puppets retired from a 90's kids show getting murdered one at a time. It looked stupid!
Fifty Shades Freed, thank God there won't be anymore!
God's Not Dead 3 or 4. These propaganda movies need to stop! I'm content with going to hell thank you very much!

New Years resolutions of 2019

Starting this back up again because I need them, and I'm gonna do my best to stick to them.

1. Have at least one healthy meal a week, such as a vegan meal.

2. Hold back more on typing replies to those whom you disagree with if it would only waste your time or not make them see the other side. Especially on political posts. Speaking of which...share less political posts, unless it leads to having civil discussions.

3. Cut back on the time spent on the computer. try to complete chores before turning on laptop, and complete kitchen clean up before returning to my room.

4. Stick to finding a job since the clock is ticking on being left on my own.

5. If I borrow from my savings account, stick to paying it back with interest.

6. Next concert tickets I buy should be a band I haven't seen live yet. It can be the cheapest tickets and I can buy just one shirt.

Best and Worst of 2018...So far

OK, I'm doing something new. I'm starting this list early because so much has happened already, and it's not even June yet!

Best New Album:
Prequelle by Ghost. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet, but I know it's gonna be good!

Best Songs:
Dance Macabre by Ghost
Zombie- the Cranberries cover done by Bad Wolves

Person of the Year:
James Shaw Jr. The man who stopped the shooter at a Waffle House in Nashville Tennessee, and without a gun!

Most Hated People of the Year:
Roger Daltrey of The Who. I never thought I'd ever have to add his name here, but I have because of what he said about the #MeToo movement. He quoted that rock stars don't sexually harass women because they don't have to! In the past, I certainly had a crush on him, but not anymore! I'm not gonna listen to The Who for awhile (something else I never thought I'd say!)
Roseanne Barr: For what she tweeted yesterday where she called Obama's aide Valarie Jarrett an Ape, which prompted ABC to cancel her revived show Roseanne. Then she tried to blame it in Ambien.

I will update this list at another time.

New Years Resolutions

I give up! Looking back at past lists, it's always the same stuff! So I'm not gonna bother making any.

Best and Worst of 2017

Another year has passed and still more celebrity deaths, this time it was the musicians turn. But another tragedy is the five to six wildfires that started in different places around Southern California. It hit closer to home for me because one of my aunt's was camping in Carpinteria, but she and my uncle moved to Pismo. It was also a year of triumph as many victims of sexual abuse came out of the shadows and were no longer silent, both female and male. Unfortunately not all the abusers are being punished yet, but some allegations may be false and that only makes it harder for the real victims to come forward. So onto my lists of the best and worst of the year.

Best New Albums:
Iron Maiden-Book of Souls Live. the original came out in 2015, but they released their live version this year, so I get to relive my concert experience.
Ghost-Ceremony and Devotion. I don't have it yet, but I will soon and I will get to relive my ritual experiences.
Stone Sour-Hydrograd. As always, they manage to top their last albums and I finally got to see them live for the first time!
Metallica-Hardwired. This was on last years list, but I have it this time! Also got to see them live.
Avenged Sevenfold-The Stage (Deluxe Edition) 6 cover songs were added to this version.

Best Songs:
Maleguena Salerosa-covered by Avenged Sevenfold, a Spanish folk song that is over 100 years old!
Song #3-by Stone Sour
Spit out the Bone-by Metallica
Oh Lord-by In This Moment
The World is Yours-by Arch Enemy
Love Falls-by Hellyeah

Person of the Year:
The victims of sexual abuse in Hollywood and the music industry who got the courage to come forward after Harvey Weinstein's victims came forward first.

Most Hated People of the Year:
Donald Trump: Third year in a row on this list! Still hasn't been impeached!
Roy Moore: Alabama judge who is running for Senate. Accused of sexual misconduct and hasn't been charged. Update: He lost!
Harvey Weinstein: Film producer who over the years sexually harassed actresses and was never stopped, until now! The accusations that have come to light started a domino effect on others who did the same as him.

In Memorium:
Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Tom Petty, Adam West, Mary Tyler Moore, Hugh Hefner, Charlie Murphy, Bill Paxton, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry,

Good Riddance!:
Charles Manson-Unfortunately he got to die a peaceful death, something his victims never got.

Best TV Shows:
The Defenders-Marvel show on Netflix. I haven't finished it yet, but I thought it was good. It brings together Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and DareDevil.
Preacher-Based off a graphic novel. Not for the faint of heart, but very crazy! Preacher get possessed by a spirit that was conceived by a demon and angel.
Inhumans-Was originally part of the phase 4 MCU line-up, but made into a TV show instead.

Best Movies:
Guardians of the Galaxy 2-Changed parts from the original comic, but still a good movie.
Spider-Man Homecoming-Brought back to Marvel, even though Sony was loaning the character to Marvel.
Thor Ragnorok-All part of the MCU. Finally got planet Hulk version of Hulk.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi-This movie is both loved and hated by fans. Some fanboys need to chill and just enjoy the movie!
the Shape of Water-I haven't seen it yet, but I really want to! It's directed by Guillermo Del Toro and is about a mute woman and a sea creature who fall in love and do it!
Wonder Woman-I'm not a fan of DC very much, but this movie was way better than Batman vs Superman! and being directed by a female made it even better! and her costume was actual armor and not sexualized.

Worst Movies:
Valerian and the City of a 1,000 Planets-Based off a French comic strip. Usually I hate trailers that give away too much of the movie, but the trailers for this one were so vague that I didn't know what the movie was about or what the plot was going to be!
Geostorm-Went with a so-called friend to see it, wasn't that great.
The Emoji Movie-Who the hell thought making this movie was a good idea!? and why did Patrick Stewart agree to do voice work?
Transformers The Last Knight-I can't believe I'm putting one of these on this list, but this movie really was bad! Some parts retconned some of the back story and other part made no sense. I just hope the Bumblebee movie will redeem the transformers franchise.
Justice League-Didn't bother seeing it because I heard it took two steps back with Wonder Woman where her costume was sexualized.
