The last two days have been horrible! On Sunday I let my best friend borrow my car so she could fit more of her stuff in it. She's still in the process of getting moved in to her new apartment. I stayed at her apartment while she was getting that done. Luckily I had my guitar with me that day and I was able to have a couple of practices. Unfortunately my friend lives in a inconvenient location where there is nothing to do. There's a 7-11 and a couple of Grade B pizza places nearby and that's about it! On Monday, I went back to her place because her boyfriend offered to change the oil in my car as a "thank You" for doing them the favors of driving them around. That was supposed to be the only thing they were supposed to do. Once again I stayed at her apartment while her boyfriend worked on my car. Since I thought I was only going to be there for an hour at the most, I left my guitar at home. BIG MISTAKE! I got bored out of my mind! I must've looked out her window a hundred times hoping I would see my car. They did fix it, but her boyfriend had other plans and went to his mom's house. They got held up there and were there for hours and hours. My friend had plenty of movies there to watch, but I can only watch so many before I get bored. I got frustrated that they took such a long time to get back, which was about 1:30 in the mourning! I was supposed to get back home because I had Ads to work on and I had to force myself to get up early in the mourning to get them done. Of course I could've actually got them done sooner, but that was my fault for putting them off.
Spending two days at my friend's apartment was bad enough, but I do feel sorry for her and her boyfriend who live there everyday. At least he has a job to fill up half the day and my friend will be getting one shortly, but I wondered what else they do to pass the time. My friend told me that they have each other to talk to and they do drawings a lot. I guess the good thing about living in a place where there's absolutely nothing to do at all, it forces you to get creative on finding fun things to do. The whole point I was trying to make is, I'll never go anywhere without my guitar again!

Ha! Ha! You would be sooooo bored where I live! Absolutely nuthin' for mile after tranquil mile. No pizza joints, no movie theatres or bars, or stores or malls.
We have the Alida Country Store 3 miles away. Alida, population 16!
The nearest post office is 10 miles, and that town has a couple bars and a cafe. I've never gotten that desperate for something to do!
I always have my guitar in other words!

Ticharu,
Even though you live in a place where there's absolutely nothing to do, I think that's what makes you even more creative. Some great bands have come from areas where there's nothing to do. Although some great bands have come from big cities, most of them start to sound the same.
If you have your guitar, you don't need to find other things to do.
I've got a bass and electric. I'm more of a bass player as I've played it in bands but I enjoy playing the guitar as well. I guess where I live there isn't a lot to do!
I hate being in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. I usually carry a sketchbook and pencil just incase the urge to be creative overcomes me!
I have a guitar, and i vow one day to learn how to play it :S
xxmaryxx
For me it doesn't matter if I'm living in a big city or the middle of the country. I tend to isolate myself just the same. I actually see more people now than I did when I lived in Minneapolis.
Creativity for me comes from the desire to live in my own world. So I'm surrounded by a house that is un-like anything anyone else lives in, and the music I create is just part of the unique environment I create for myself.
If I could create films, I'd do that too!
If it were up to me, and a person wanted a car for example, they would have to design it themselves.
OK, I'm odd... but think of it, in my world there would be NO MACDONALDS! Everyone would create their own vision of the world.
MC, I think I can go one better!! lol.
I have the biggest gig of my life coming up on the weekend (see my blog for details!) and so on Sunday night I sat down to re-string my guitar (White Fender Tele). I took all the old strings off, got the cloth and the wax out and gave my baby a really nice spring clean! Then I realised I didnt have any new strings!! I was really desperate to get some quality practice in ready for my gig but I couldnt play the bloody thing!! Having no guitar is one thing....but having a guitar with no strings is sooooooooooooooo frustrating!!! lol
I have a guitar but can't find the time to play enough!!
I guess we all have our "issues". Now that you are back home, PLAY THE GUTS OUT OF THE THING...then smash it! Oh well not if you can't afford a new one!!
Long Live Rock!
Johnathan,
Good quote! I love "Guitar & Pen"
Natters,
Thanks for dropping by! Bass guitars are cool too.
Marymoo,
You should start learning the guitar now, I wish I had started sooner. I suggest taking Classical guitar classes, they teach all the basics of guitar playing.
Ticharu,
A world without McDonald's is what I wish for too! I never liked that place, and I hated it even more after working there.
Spiny,
Oh Man! That sucks! I hope you got some strings for that guitar now.
Stradasphere,
I only own two guitars so far, I would never smash my very first one! When I have enough to spare, I will smash one.
Never leave home without it!! Yep, living in the middle of nowhere you figure out and create different things to do. In the city or even surburbia there is always something available without a thought process. I live in the country and it took awhile but you find lots of things to do, just different from a busy environment within reach. The nearest town for me is 2 hours away, anything is 2 hours away! The nearest neighbor is 5 miles away. So, yeah, you might be bored here too. Speaking of a small town, I see your pic of Kirk Hammet, I met him in the little town I live in, came into the store in the dead of winter a few years back, and there he was. very nice and polite. a bit shy. anyway, hope all is well with you xo Grace
I learned a long time ago...the guitar is a special item...even if it is a cheap-o one (I know nothing of yours...no intent, there, just my own history).
I am a very poor musician, but I know about wanting to make sound.

Hi Metalchick, thanks for coming by my blog again. I've been a bit quiet this last few days because I was preparing for a visit from dear Anne Marie, and now she's been and gone...very sad for me. She's absolutely great, and so much fun to be with, and we had so much to talk about. I just wish it could have been for a bit longer.
Anyway, as regards your post, that's a very good rule to have made for yourself! My ma used to say 'there's nothing like a bit of healthy boredom to get the inner resources going', and I think she was right there. We lived on a farm in a remote part of South Africa when my kids were small with no electricity, TV or any other amusements so they had to make their own, and even now, they are both very creative!
I love writing and playing my mandolin, so I'm never bored...;-)
hmmmm MetalChick
I'd say the first thing to do is to figure out how to "eliminate" the word "boredom" from ones vocabulary...
Now, it is much harder to be "hostage" of friend’s antics and plans! That is almost unforgivable - have been there and it causes me to have the foulest moods ever. I had ended a couple of friendships as a result of that.
Cool!
thanks for your comment:)
greets Elke!

Do me a favour? When you get around to smashing a guitar, can you make it Andy's please? It's the only way we gwt him to stop playing it!

guitars, guitars guitars i love em, i can play (and have) for twenty hours on occaision, there is a barrier where when u pass it, you can do anything on it- i love that feeling.
Wow! it's so funny reading about how I felt at that time.
I realize now that I was an idiot for going back to her apartment the next day, and all I complained about was there not being anything to do!? I was also an idiot for letting her dumbass boyfriend change the oil in my car, and I complained about forgetting my guitar? I actually complained about them being gone so long because they didn't ask me if it was Ok to go to his mom's house! I almost lost my job because of them being gone all day! Also, her boyfriend lost one of the tire ramps! Now when my dad needs to change the oil in his cars, he has to use the curb of the driveway along with the single ramp we have!
"Spending two days at my friend's apartment was bad enough, but I do feel sorry for her and her boyfriend who live there everyday."
WHAT! What the Hell was I thinking! I don't feel sorry for them! They're the ones that chose to live in a ghetto city!
It is true that they had each other to pass the time, but I would like to add that they also fought and argued a lot, that passes time too!
"The Whole point I was trying to make is, I'll never go anywhere without my guitar again!"
UPDATE: The point I should've made was, "Don't trust your best friend's loser boyfriend and his homies to change the oil for you, and let him take your car so he can drag his girlfriend along with him to his mom's house so he can visit his daughter that he doesn't raise, then yell at his girlfriend because she tried asking for a soda for twenty minutes and told him, "but you got your daughter a soda right away when she asked" then use that to blame her for "Disrespecting his daughter." over and over again.
He never even told me he was going to his moms house! When they told me that they wanted to change the oil in my car, they said it would only take two hours, and that's it!
